MVM Rail has two shareholders:

  • Macmahon Holdings is a 60% shareholder
  • Capital, Comsa (of Spain) is a 40% shareholder

Macmahon is a major Australian Civil Engineering and Mining Contractor (publicly listed ASX200) with an annual turnover of approximately AUD$1.2 Billion. Macmahon has an enviable record in transport infrastructure projects (road and rail) including Alice Springs to Darwin Railway (NT); Tonkin Highway (WA); and Mitchell Freeway (WA). MVM can operate as a seperate company to Macmahon, or together with Macmahon to offer clients an integrated “in house” civil and rail construction capacity, including:

    • Earthworks, Bridges, Tracklaying, Maintenance, Management of Design and Management of Signalling and Overhead Traction Systems

In 1992, Australian shareholders, COMSA Empresa Constructora (COMSA SA) of Spain (one of the largest specialist rail track contractors in Europe) and Valditerra Spa of Italy collaborated to form the present company, MVM Rail Pty Ltd.

COMSA who was founded in 1891 and Valditerra have been operating track renewal machines since 1971. Both groups have machines working in Europe on major renewal projects. Their expertise, equipment and personnel are available to MVM Rail.

COMSA has extensive experience with underground track construction, including the installation of floating slab track and twin block cast in-situ slab. Over 400 km of high speed track has been laid by the group using the latest technology for high precision track-laying. The group has collectively laid or rebuilt over 10,000 km of new track. MVM Rail have been operating in Australia, Asia and Europe, both singularly and in joint venture, designing, constructing and rehabilitating existing track using state-of-the-art equipment provided by MVM Rail. Recent projects include


• Australia:
  • Pring Rail Yard Upgrade, Bowen, QLD – MVM is an Alliance participant managing the civil works
  • Lawson Turnback, NSW – main contractor with Railcorp for the track construction, civil works & overhead traction works
  • Fortescue Metal Group (FMG), WA – provision of Flashbutt Welder and High Speed Tamper & Regulator for the Trackworks
  • Rapid Growth Phase 4 (RGP 4), Newman, WA – MVM is constructing the trackwork for its client, BHP. 21km of track & 12 turnouts.
  • Richmond Line Alliance, Sydney, NSW - MVM is an Alliance participant constructing the trackwork and managing the overhead traction works
  • Windsor Level Crossings, Sydney, NSW – upgrading of two level crossings and associated civil works for the RTA, NSW.
  • Kingsgrove to Revesby Quadruplication, Sydney, NSW - MVM is an Alliance participant constructing the trackwork and managing the overhead traction works
  • Jilalan Rail Yard Upgrade, Mackay, QLD – MVM is an Alliance participant managing the civil works
  • Eyre Peninsula Rail Upgrade, Port Lincoln, SA – MVM is an Alliance participant. Works include rerailing, resleepering, extensive Flashbutt welding and resurfacing
  • Southern Improvement Alliance (Melbourne to Sydney) – member of the alliance providing extensive sleeper replacement, 115km of new passing lane construction, Wodonga Rail Bypass, Missing Link works in Melbourne for the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC)
  • Mitchell Freeway extension in Perth, required new track construction with the tie in to be done in a single 64 hour shutdown, including management of the overhead trackworks and signalling
  • Fremantle Rail Loop, Perth, WA– design and construction of a new yard and rail loop, including signalling, bridgeworks and extensive civil work
  • Pacific National Yard, Perth, WA – construction of new track and turnouts
  • SCT Yard, Perth, WA - construction of new track and turnouts
  • SCT Yard, Parkes, NSW - construction of new track and turnouts
  • Weeli Ponda, Hesta and Area C, Newman, WA (RGP 3) for BHP – New rail loops for iron ore track
  • Orebody 18, Mt Newman, WA (RGP 2) for BHP – joint venture for the construction of 7.5km of new iron ore track
  • Craigieburn Deviation, Melbourne, VIC – construction of new track
  • Boggabri Coal Loop, NSW – new coal loop construction including signalling works
  • Wilpinjong Coal Loop, NSW - new coal loop construction including signalling works
  • Yarra Trams, Melbourne, VIC - numerous smaller projects completed
  • Austrak Depot, Melbourne, NSW - construction of new track and turnouts
  • Numerous small projects for Railcorp and ARTC in NSW - tamping, use of Mobile FBW etc.

•  Malaysia:
  • MVM Rail joint ventured railway work including the Light Rapid Transit in Kuala Lumpur and the Mainline Track Doubling Project – Raiwang to Ipoh.
• Thailand:
  • MVM Rail supplied technology and specialised equipment for reconstruction of over 600 km of existing track.
• Philippines:
  • MVM Rail supplied technology and equipment for various projects, including the LRT in Manila and as the primary contractor on the Main Line South Revitalization Project from Manila to Legaspi, including bridge erection and sleeper manufacturing.
• Taiwan:
  • MVM Rail was involved in new track work construction on the Taiwan High Speed Line, providing substantial flash butt welding equipment and services.
• India:
  • MVM Rail provided project management, site supervision and welding services for the track construction of the Metro Light Rail System in New Delhi.
• Ireland:
  • MVM Rail joint ventured design and construction of all civil, building and track works for the Dublin LRT System (LUAS Tramway).


MVM Rail, using the resources of its shareholders, can accommodate all aspects of track work from new track design and construction through to complete reconstruction and maintenance.
